Audrey Yang

“Hello! I’m Audrey Yang, an incoming freshman at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I studied realistic art techniques throughout childhood, but I only began expressing myself through art in high school. Thanks to three incredible mentors, I unraveled painful emotions through daily sketchbooks and experimentation. By putting my flaws and insecurities out there via art, I gradually came to accept them. When others explained that they had similar struggles and my work made them feel seen, we were able to heal because we realized we weren’t alone. Today, art lets me freely communicate what I’ve learned, what I love, and what I truly feel. Currently, I’m working on a piece titled “Across Space, Across Time, Against All Odds,” as a part of a multimedia series regarding unconditional love. Right now, we need that more than anything - to know that despite our flaws, mistakes, weaknesses, shortcomings, and hardships, we are lovable. It is an invaluable constant that keeps us steady and hopeful in a world that’s always changing, always unpredictable, and always moving forwards. 

In my art, I work very spontaneously - I determine the theme of the work beforehand and create a few thumbnail sketches, but I tend to go with what feels right in the moment. Aside from art, I love playing piano, badminton, writing, and playing video games.”
